HP Hettich is a relative latecomer to being an "artist", although during his architecture studies, he earnestly studied free-hand drawing. He started producing his art in 1992 by making postcard-size photographic collages, as a quasi counter balance to his normally constrained work as an architect.

His first exhibition was in 1997. The poetic, paradoxical playfulness and nuanced colors in contrast to the formal, exacting structure of the collages found a welcome public. This encouraged him to make more room for his art while continuing his work as an architect.

Photography followed his photographic collages. His eyes scanned walls and the remnants of walls, sought structures within the aging materials, and was enthralled with the beauty of the . traces of the past, delighting in the strangeness and absurdity.

While visiting Los Angeles in 2003, he found garbage on the streets -- rusty, flattened, muddy fragments from metal, cardboard, paper and plastic; discarded or lost objects that had lost their usefulness were given a "second chance" in his assemblages. They gained a new life by being included in the artistic process and thus part of a work of art.

HP Hettich perceives new content in the forms he have developed, yet at the same time he attempt to leave room for the imagination of the observer.
